John,
Today, Amplify Action is remembering the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King not only spoke to mass audiences and led the historic Civil Rights March in Washington, but he was instrumental in the passage of landmark legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and much more.
Over the last year, we've seen protests across the country against police brutality on Black lives — a battle Dr. King himself fought for 50 years ago. In 1964, his advocacy was critical in the passage of the Civil Rights Act, which outlawed racial discrimination. And when Dr. King pushed to pass the Voting Rights Act a year later, he helped reduce the barriers that disproportionately limit Black voters from engaging in basic democratic rights.
Today, we continue to be reminded by Martin Luther King Jr.'s achievements in the Civil Rights Movement that
real change must happen, and it requires our voices to be heard.
Our work at Amplify Action has sought to carry on Dr. King's legacy by empowering Black voters and narrowing the gap between Black people and the ballot box — but we still have so much work to do.
The 2020 election and 2021 runoffs are examples of just how powerful the vote can be to make historical change in our democracy.
So as we remember the message of freedom and liberation from Dr. King, we must continue to uplift one another.
The platform he created for Black Americans is fundamental to the work we carry out today.
Let’s keep fighting,
-- Amplify Action
