NAFCU's award-winning advocacy team is maintaining its pressure on Capitol Hill to defend credit union priorities, including responding to recent efforts by bankers to challenge the credit union tax exemption and seek nominal leases for banks on military bases.


House passes bill to give FIs marijuana banking safe harbor [ [link removed] ]
The House Wednesday passed legislation designed to provide a safe harbor for credit unions and other lenders that serve marijuana-related businesses (MRBs) in states that have legalized the drug. This is the first vote by Congress to do so; Senate Banking Committee leaders have indicated their desire to consider similar legislation.

The CFPB Wednesday released four questions and answers to help financial institutions comply with amendments made to the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act (SAFE Act) by the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act (S. 2155).


Small biz loan programs webinar set for Oct. 16 [ [link removed] ]
The NCUA and Small Business Administration (SBA) will hold a webinar Oct. 16 to share benefits of credit unions participating in various SBA loan programs. NAFCU works closely with the SBA to expand access to credit union small-dollar loans to small businesses across the nation.


Senate panel cites need for competition in faster payments [ [link removed] ]
Members of the Senate Banking Committee stressed the need for equal competition in faster payments during Wednesday's hearing focused on the issue. In addition, senators noted that a government real-time payment system would help to serve families, community banks, and credit unions.


Call providers, FCC acknowledge concerns with call blocking [ [link removed] ]
A number of phone service providers and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) acknowledged potential issues with call blocking errors as a result of a new caller identification framework – known as SHAKEN/STIR – during a NAFCU-attended PACE Consumer Protection Coalition meeting Wednesday.

August's 7.1 percent increase in new-home sales continues a strong trend throughout the year. Lower mortgage rates have supported sales, and NAFCU's Curt Long said higher inventory will &quot;sop up some of the supply shortages in the existing market.&quot;
