Fighting for equity, one step at a time.
Friends,
On this day, we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight for equity. And we are reminded that while there were great strides in the fight for equity in Dr. King's lifetime, there is still much to be done. So today, as we celebrated the life of Dr. King and the progress we've made as a nation, I announced that the City of New Orleans will be taking another step to ensure equal opportunities for all.
Too many of our minority and women-owned businesses have not been getting their fair share when it comes to doing business with the City of New Orleans. To address this disparity, my administration has granted the Office of Supplier Diversity an earlier and more important role in the city's procurement process. We are also introducing new systems to track and hold city contractors accountable. These actions represent small, but important steps to making New Orleans a more equitable place.
Today, my promise to you as your mayor is that we will not stop here. From top to bottom, no matter how big or small, we will work to ensure every action taken by our city government follows in the example set by Dr. King.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell
