Rachel Maddow: "If [Trump] wants to avoid even the possibility of a federal lifetime ban on holding office and a potential ten year ... prison sentence because of his role in inciting the Capitol violence ... [the way] is to get a federal pardon.

"If he were to resign from office now, in exchange for Mike Pence pardoning him, well, that would work."

The New York Times broke the news that Trump is seriously considering getting himself pardoned, and in case there are naysayers, Rachel Maddow has shed light on how and why Trump would make it work.

This is a five-alarm fire. Trump knows he's on the hook for four years of corruption, fraud, and obstruction -- not to mention responsibility for inciting an armed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol -- and once he leaves office, he could face legal jeopardy. But trying to weasel out of it could cause a constitutional crisis.
