Hellooooo, Houston DSA!
It is my great pleasure to introduce you to the seventh edition of the Houston DSA Newsletter. I am your host, our chapter Communications Secretary, Stephen Adkison. Writing this is one of my great pleasures, and I would greatly appreciate if you would share the newsletter link with a socialism-curious friend! Let's show off who we are, and all the work we do.
Without further ado, here is issue 7 of the Houston DSA newsletter!

Medicare for All Canvass of CD-7
|
With Austin Rep. Lloyd Doggett becoming the latest co-sponsor of HR 1384 (Medicare for All), the pressure is on all Texas Democrats to join the push for insurance for everyone!
As part of our fight for Medicare for All, we are demanding Representative Lizzie Fletcher co-sign HR 1384, Pramila Jayapal’s Medicare for All bill. We are canvassing her district on July 21. If you are interested, come join us at Briar Meadow Park, 7703 Richmond Ave at 10 AM. Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and the determination that we will win!

General Convention Fundraising!
|
The National Convention is rapidly approaching! Because of you, our DSA chapter is sending 11 delegates to the 2019 DSA National Convention. The convention will be the largest gathering of American Socialists in modern times and will set the national agenda for the next two years. As a working-class organization, many of us live on small budgets and can’t afford to attend the convention on our own - but this shouldn’t be a barrier to participation.
We need your help to cover $6,000 in travel costs for our delegates, and we still need a lot of support. Please give a solidarity gift today of $25, $50, or $100 today here. Thank you for your support! If you've already given, thank you! We could always use some more money to reimburse our costs. If you haven't, please consider it! The convention is in about two weeks. Giving financially is an act of solidarity, and we appreciate it.

Our Reading Group met last week to kick off our discussion of Samuel Stein's Capital City: Gentrification and the Real Estate State. How has government-led urban planning contributed to the segregation and gentrification we currently have, and how can a socialist vision use those same visions to push for housing justice? That and more were discussed, and will be discussed again at the next meeting, Monday July 22.
We had our monthly General Meeting last week! Thank you to all who made it out. It was a big night for us. We voted to endorse Ashton Woods for City Council At Large #5. Ashton has so much valuable experience as an organizer, and his vision for Houston aligns with ours. I for one am excited to canvass for him and win a seat on City Council! Later, member Bryan LaVergne led a discussion around forming a criminal justice coalition. This would continue the work we did around electing Judges Franklin Bynum and DaShaun Jones towards our goal of prison abolition.

As always, thanks for sticking through to the end. I couldn't ask for a better group of organizers to call comrades. May your week be filled with the unique joys that come from experiencing true solidarity, and let's smash capitalism!
See you next time,
Your Communications Secretary, Stephen Adkison
