"I have.. the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits."
Dr Martin Luther King Jr. accepting 1964 Nobel Peace Prize

Fifty seven years after Dr. Martin Luther King accepted the Nobel Peace Prize the struggle for justice and unity, and against hate and division, is more urgent and relevant than ever.

Four years of Donald Trump challenged our democratic institutions like never before, exacerbated inequality, and emboldened those pursing a very different path for our country from the one Dr King dedicated his life to.

But one thing is clear: we fought back hard from day one and, after four exhausting years, we achieved a critical victory in November — a vital opportunity to advance the pursuit of justice in these troubled times.

This new chapter begins Wednesday with the swearing-in of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

The challenges we face are not small, but I believe the strong coalition we have built these last four years is up to the task ahead — defeating the politics of hate and accelerating the work of building a more perfect union.

This is an historic moment. Our children are watching. The world they inherit rests on our ability to make progress. Even as the recent violent attack on our Capitol weighs heavily on our minds, the unwavering support and engagement of so many Americans who voted overwhelmingly in the midst of this pandemic give me confidence and hope.

On this day we honor Dr. King I am especially pleased to be welcoming a new colleague to the Senate, the individual who currently holds the title senior pastor in the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King preached, the Reverend, now-Senator, Raphael Warnock!

Thank you for being part of this important struggle for the soul of our country,

Chris
