John,

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of an American hero – the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Through the power of his words and peaceful demonstrations, Dr. King created a movement centered around racial justice and equality. Although we have made progress – over five decades later – there remains work to be done.

As we honor Dr. King’s legacy and those who marched with him, we must continue to fight for justice, equality, and peace through our daily actions. Every time we stand up for what is right, give back to our community, show our neighbors kindness, we are advancing his mission.

This year’s celebration is especially powerful for two reasons:

One: For the first time in U.S. history, we elected the first woman – and first person of color – as Vice President. This was made possible by the work of Dr. King and so many other civil rights leaders.

Two: After four years of a president who incited race-based violence, emboldened white supremacists, and refused to acknowledge that systemic racism exists – we will finally have leadership that supports the fight for racial equity.

John, I believe in our country. I believe we can create the America that Dr. King dreamed of for his children. Thank you for doing your part to fulfill that dream.

Sincerely,
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr.
