Folks,

Today we reflect on the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King worked relentlessly to end racial injustice in America and pushed us all to do more in the pursuit of equality. In his seminal “I Have a Dream” speech, he laid out a vision for the nation we could be — one where a person’s opportunity is determined not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

In that speech, Dr. King laid bare the harsh truth that America had not yet lived up to its founding ideals. As we continue his fight for justice and equity today, we must admit that America still has not achieved its promise of freedom, democracy, and opportunity for all people.

Black Americans continue to suffer under a racist criminal justice system and the failed War on Drugs, face enormous barriers at the ballot box, and lack the economic empowerment that holds the key to a brighter, more equitable future.

Dr. King said the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. Today, it’s on us to continue to bend that arc, in big and small ways, until his dream is realized. As we begin the 117th Congress tomorrow, I am committed to continuing the work, and I know you will join me in your own work throughout New Mexico.

— Martin
