Dear John,
Just shy of fifty years in business and after performing thousands of abortions, Lovejoy Surgicenter in Portland has closed. It was the oldest and largest independent abortion provider in the state, a symbol of the abortion industry in Oregon from the beginning.
They also participated in a gruesome trade with Oregon Health and Sciences University: body parts (including livers and thymuses) from aborted babies for money.
Since they opened in 1971, thousands of faithful sidewalk advocates have held peaceful vigils outside its doors, offering hope and physical support to the women entering and exiting. (My deputy director Liberty was able to help two women choose life for their children during one 40 Days for Life campaign.)
Countless children are alive today because of their work.
Jesus teaches, "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, ".
When I read this, I think about those faithful pro-life advocates who have prayed for the workers and medical professionals of Lovejoy Surgicenter for nearly 50 years. Not only were they there for the abortion-minded women, they also were there for those entangled in the abortion business.
Tomorrow is another day as we continue to advocate for life. Today, let's be thankful this place has closed and pray that no other facility will rise up in its place.
Because everyone deserves an advocate,
Lois Anderson
