Hey friend - today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all he has done for this country. Dr. King was a leader in our nation at a time when speaking out was dangerous. He knew all too well that nothing would change unless he ensured that voices like John Lewis, Rosa Parks, Bayard Rustin, and so many others in the Civil Rights Movement were heard.
This past year has been rife with challenges and controversy, and I know that Dr. King would have stood up to any injustice he saw today the same as he did over 65 years ago -- something I strive to do every day as your Congresswoman. Friend, though we’ve come a long way from Selma, the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, and the March on Washington, we still have a long way to go. But I also know that while our country faces its challenges, Dr. King would be so proud of how far we’ve come. Not only is the Congressional Black Caucus over 50 members strong, but we’ve also had an African American President, and now, Kamala Harris is the first African American and South Asian woman to be Vice President. So today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and on Wednesday at the historic inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, we get back to work. Yours, Yvette
