This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I'm thinking about justice.
On January 6, our nation witnessed a traumatic event, as an angry mob sought to disrupt the certification of the Electoral College vote.
An armed mob seeking to overthrow the government was able to storm one of the most secure buildings in America and – for several hours – seemed to have free reign. Contrast that with images from last summer – as peaceful Black Lives Matter protestors in Washington, D.C. were met with violence and assaulted with tear gas all to make room for a presidential photo-op.
Dr. King told us, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." There can't be two systems of justice. That's why in the days following the attack, I joined over 105 Members of Congress in demanding an independent investigation by the Government Accountability Office into the failures of leadership and preparation.
If you're angry about the disparity we witnessed, you should be. The American people deserve answers, and justice must be served. To join me in calling for an investigation into the Capitol Police response to the January 6 attack, add your name today.
The Confederate battle flag never breached the doors of the U.S. Capitol building during the Civil War. But it did during the attack on the Capitol.
As we fight for accountability, as we demand answers, we need to embody the bold leadership and activism of Dr. King. He told us, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
But that bending doesn't happen on its own. It happens because people of good hearts and strong commitment work to bend it toward justice, together.
