Friend,

Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a national hero whose impact on the march for social and racial justice is still felt. As we are embroiled in a grim chapter in this country’s history, I hope you will join me in recommitting to Dr. King's march.

Dr. King was assassinated after he traveled to Memphis to participate in the sanitation workers strike. To him, civil rights were buoyed by economic justice. He lost his life fighting for justice, for protecting every person’s right to vote, for ensuring every child has access to an equitable public education, and for demanding social and economic justice for every American. His powerful work and his mission to create a more just America was deeply rooted in his faith and unwavering moral courage.

His legacy calls on us to continue fighting against injustice in our society today -- to overcome generations of voter suppression, to fight for equal rights for every single American, and to demand that every child receives a quality public education.

I hope that we all take today to reflect on the world around us and renew our commitment to Dr. King’s call to action. If we reject the division and violence that has soured our political environment, and instead embrace Dr. King’s values of freedom, justice, and opportunity for all throughout our work -- we will continue to bend the arc toward justice.
