Hello John,
When I tell people that you can still legally keep a monkey as a pet in the UK, people don't believe me. "Surely it's illegal?" people say. "They are wild animals! They are so intelligent!" they say.
But tragically, there is no law prohibiting humans from keeping wild monkeys or other non-human primates as pets in the UK.
For some species you require a licence but for many, like the marmoset monkeys in these photos, you can simply go to a pet shop and buy one.
Monkeys like these should not be kept as pets. Many spend years languishing in bird cages in people's homes or in garden sheds. We believe thousands of monkeys live like this every day. Suffering out of sight.
Well right now we have a chance to END this cruel trade and put a stop to the suffering. TAKE ACTION! ([link removed])
Right now the Government is consulting on a possible ban on primates as pets in England. So animal advocates like us need to let them know that we would support a ban!
Find out more and respond to the consultation here: www.freedomforanimals.org.uk/have-your-say-ban-primates-as-pets
The consultation is only open until 6th February so we must act fast!
When responding, be sure to make it clear that you would support a total ban on this trade, and NOT accept any form of further licensing to keep primates captive. These are wild animals whose needs can never be met as pets - only a ban will protect them!
Thank you so much for taking action.
For the animals,
Sam Threadgill
Director
Freedom for Animals
P.S. Please take action today to protect primates from a lifetime of misery. Tell DEFRA to ban the primate pet trade! ([link removed])
