John,
This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls in between what will likely be remembered as two of the most consequential events of 2021.
The first saw President Donald Trump incite an insurrection -- no doubt fueled by white supremacist elements -- at the Capitol. The second will see us make history by inaugurating President-elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, who will be the first-ever African American woman to serve as Vice President.
The contrast is stark, and though we are making progress -- in no small part due to Dr. King and his fellow civil rights leaders’ efforts -- it’s clear that the work King began is not yet finished. The echoes of inequality and racism still permeate our society.
Dr. King’s message of unity and hope in the face of division and fear are needed today, and every day, until his vision is realized. And as long as white supremacist groups are allowed to run roughshod over our democracy and vulnerable communities are unjustly treated and threatened -- we must take up the mantle and continue his work.
Despite the challenges of the last few weeks (and months, and years) I continue to believe that together, we will realize the spirit of King’s legacy.
Onward,
Mike
