John,
Today, our country honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a revolutionary who envisioned a world free from inequality, discrimination, and poverty -- and whose legacy has reverberated throughout history.
There has always been a fight for justice. And this year, our national quest for justice for Black community members forged on. Together, we took on hatred and division by empowering Black voters and working to undo the voter suppression machine that has disenfranchised them for decades.
There is a direct throughline that can be drawn from the Freedom Summer and Montgomery Bus Boycott to the Black Lives Matter movement. Demonstrators calling for racial equality have risen up in every state, and nearly every nation, across the world. Their calls for full civil, human, and voting rights echo the calls that leaders like Dr. King and the late-Congressman John Lewis first made nearly 50 years ago.
This past year has also shown us that we still have so much more work to do. From the curtains of inequality being pulled back by COVID-19 to the double standard treatment of protesters, white supremacy still permeates nearly every aspect of our nation. We saw what happens when we, as a country, accept that Black, Indigenous, and communities of color shoulder more than their fair share of our nation's flaws.
We are far from where we need to be to realize Dr. King's dream. You have my promise that I will spend today and every day working to live out his teaching as a public servant and member of my community. As we pause today to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, let's not only reflect on all that he taught us, let's also renew our dedication to creating that truly just and equal society he dreamt of.
I invite you to read his" Letter From A Birmingham Jail" ([link removed]), listen to his famous "I Have a Dream" speech ([link removed]), participate in acts of service ([link removed]), and make a plan to live your life in a way that promotes justice, equality, and opportunity for all.
Thank you,
Diana
