Friend,
Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day amidst difficult and unprecedented times. We must address the cracks in our institutions and social fabric that less than two weeks ago led a mob, fueled by white supremacy, to attack the U.S. Capitol and the heart of our democracy.
At times like these it can feel like we are very far away from reaching the America that Dr. King dreamed of. But I have hope -- because I have seen the work that the majority of Americans are doing to restore and strengthen democracy and fight for racial justice and equity. With the election of 2020 we showed that we reject bigotry and authoritarianism and embrace an America where everyone has their voice heard.
I am proud of the role the NDRC has played by working against the gerrymandering and voter suppression that many politicians have used to deny communities of color political power. I am proud of the progress we have contributed to in states like Georgia, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. And I am optimistic that by continuing to advocate for voting rights and democracy reform, we are working toward a truly equitable nation.
It's clear that we have a long way to go. But I am more grateful than ever that you are in this with us. As we celebrate Dr. King, let us recommit ourselves to his struggle for the America we know is possible.
Thank you,
Garrett
