AFSCME Family,
This year, the day we celebrate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. seems a little different. We’re living in a moment of uncertainty and unrest. The despicable attack on the U.S. Capitol by violent insurrectionists seeking to overturn a fair and democratic election represents everything that Dr. King fought against.
But as we are about to turn the corner and usher in new national elected leadership, I had some thoughts this MLK Day about how Dr. King’s legacy provides us with a path forward.
We stand on the verge of inaugurating a new president who will stand with working people, take the coronavirus seriously and fund those of us working on the front lines of the pandemic. Elected officials who support our agenda (including the pastor who currently presides at Dr. King’s own Ebenezer Baptist Church) will hold majorities in the House and Senate.
The potential for progress is huge, but we must listen to and follow Dr. King’s call to action.
Please check out my column and join me in celebrating not just a great man, but his spirit of nonviolent action as a path to justice.
In solidarity,
Lee Saunders
AFSCME President
