In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now...This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”

Tomorrow is today.

With Democratic control of both chambers of Congress and President-elect Joe Biden about to be inaugurated on Wednesday, we have a chance to build the representative democracy we deserve and make decades worth of progress in the next year. We can’t be timid -- this is a moment for sweeping reform.

House Democrats have reintroduced the For the People Act, a bold package that would dramatically increase voter participation and crack down on corruption, through common sense measures like forcing presidential candidates to release their tax returns and reforming our campaign finance system to amplify the power of small dollar donors over wealthy white men and their corporate interests. The House has also introduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore federal protections against voter suppression. Altogether, these bills are a one-two punch of legislation we need to build back a stronger, more representative democracy.

Passing this legislation is not guaranteed and it’s up to us to carry it forward. Send a pre-written email to your legislators today and tell them you want them to prioritize and pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. It will only take a few moments!

We all saw the hours-long lines to vote early in Georgia and across the country. This wasn’t an accident; it was an intentional policy choice to keep Black and Brown voters from equal access to our democracy. And a decade ago, much of the voter suppression would have been stopped by the Voting Rights Act. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is a chance for us to bring back and strengthen the protections against voter suppression enshrined in the Voting Rights Act.

Passing the For the People Act would help us register 22 million new voters, eliminate discriminatory voter ID laws, protect voters from being purged for not voting, re-enfranchise the formerly incarcerated, and minimize the impact of wealthy donors on our politics -- reforms that would build power in Black and Brown communities.

In three days, we start a new administration. If we want to make progress on climate justice, gun safety or universal, affordable health care, then we must confront the racism and structural barriers embedded in our democracy first. Passing these bills is the way to get that done -- and emailing your legislators could make all the difference in whether or not this crucial legislation passes.

It’s up to all of us to stand up and demand the democracy that we deserve. Send an email to your senators and representative and tell them to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
