John, The Michigan state legislature has cancelled their legislative sessions for the week after threats of more armed protests. This comes after Michigan banned open carry guns from their statehouses, and so far they are the only state to ban guns from legislatives buildings.
Guns do not belong in our democratic process, plain and simple. In the last weeks, our democracy and our lawmakers have been threatened by armed extremists and the nation’s Capitol was plagued with senseless bloodshed. Our democratic institutions and American lives are on the line, and states cannot afford to wait any longer to take action. We know that banning firearms from legislative buildings can save lives. Imagine, for example, if Washington, D.C., did not ban the open carrying of firearms in public: The bloodshed at the U.S. Capitol could have been far worse. And now, with the FBI reporting that armed protests are planned in all 50 states, we must enact life-saving legislation as soon as possible.
As a united front, we can protect our democracy from armed intimidation. We need you with us now more than ever. Thank you. |
