** "We are made by history."
------------------------------------------------------------

Dear John,

We’ve reached the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at a time unlike any other in American history. In recent months, we’ve seen a number of unprecedented historic events take place in our country. From a nation-wide movement for Black lives to a global pandemic that’s taken nearly 400,000 American lives, to political upheaval that culminated in the first breach of the US Capitol building in over 200 years, as well as the only President ever to be impeached twice. And none of the above is over yet.

We’re all living through difficult times - a time when the division between the haves and have nots have only widened. There is no doubt that while this country has made some progress, we are so far from the dream that Dr. King and so many other Civil Rights activists fought for.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday specifically designated as national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and make an impact on our communities.

As Dr. King once said, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” In this moment when multiple historic crises are facing our nation and the world, we still have the power to determine what history makes of us and of this moment. So many are in need of our help and support, so if you have the means, please take this day off to give to someone in need. We ask that you contribute what you can to social justice organizations, such as:
* NAACP's Legal Defense and Education Fund ([link removed])
* Black Lives Matter ([link removed])
* Equal Justice Initiative ([link removed])
* Fair Fight ([link removed])

We’ll be discussing more things we can do to further Rev. Dr. King’s legacy during our next MCYD meeting next Wednesday ([link removed]) , but until then, take care of yourself, John, and if you can, someone else, too.
