Dear John: This is an important week for our nation, as on January 20th a new administration will take office. Given the events of January 6th, and ongoing, we urge all of our members and supporters to be cautious in the days ahead, especially those in or around state capitals, including in our nation's capital. As always, PFLAG is here for you. Don't hesitate to reach out, any time you need us. Now, here are some very special ways to stay connected with all of this week's Inaugural events, as well as a great deep dive in our Education section on working with data in support of our shared work!

A Special Inauguration Event! We're proud to join our friends at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and several of our fellow LGBTQ+ community partners as we come together as a nation for the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. On Wednesday, January 20th at 7pm ET/4pm PT, help us commemorate the road ahead for the LGBTQ+ community at this special online inaugural event, which will be available on HRC’s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube). We look forward to celebrating with you!

Support Join together, virtually, to honor lives taken by COVID Tomorrow, Tuesday January 19th, at 5:30pm ET/2:30pm PT, the Presidential Inaugural Committee is hosting a memorial to remember and honor lives lost to COVID-19. A Washington, D.C. ceremony will feature a lighting around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool; it will be the first-ever lighting around the Reflecting Pool to memorialize American lives lost. Cities and towns across the country will also participate by lighting up buildings--also in amber, to match the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool--as well as with ringing town and church bells. As a show of support for the families of those who've lost loved ones, we invite PFLAGers across the country to join in this countrywide moment of remembrance by lighting a candle in your window. You might also consider joining in a PFLAG Connects meeting to be together in virtual space and support one another for this important memorial.

Education When trying to educate yourself and others about LGBTQ+ issues, what sources do you turn to? How do know what data to trust? How do you make sense of reports that are hundreds of pages long? The Learning & Inclusion team at PFLAG National has recommendations to help! Here are a few studies, released recently, that PFLAG National staff is using in our work: What should you do next? First, read the executive summary, abstract, or press release that comes with reports when they are released. This will help you better understand the data that the authors felt was significant enough to highlight. Second, review the methodology section so you understand how many people participated in the study, how data was collected, whether the research was qualitative or quantitative, and when the research was conducted as well as who did the work. Finally, share what you’ve learned! Use data to help shape and support your education and advocacy work.

Advocacy Today's the Day! It's the National Day of Service Today we celebrate and honor the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with an opportunity for all people to unite and serve at a time when the global pandemic calls on all of us to work together and support our communities. No matter where you are, you have an opportunity to give back and the agency to do so. Most volunteer activities only require an hour or two of your time, and all events will be virtual or socially distanced, in accordance with CDC protocol. It's not too late: Find an event to participate in by checking the full list of opportunities!
