Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and remember his commitment to justice and equality.
Though he advocated non-violent protest, he lived with violence much of his life and was murdered by an assassin’s bullet as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.
At a time when our country and our institutions have endured desecration, injury, bloodshed, and death due to violent protest, I am inspired by Dr. King who challenged us to realize that through non-violence, a better world is possible.
Regarding non-violence, Dr. King stated:
“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”
I hope you will remember Dr. King’s commitment to civil rights and non-violence today and every day in our quest for a better world together.
