John --

The events of January 6, 2021, reminded the world what many of us already knew: our fight for justice, equality, and peace continues.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. told us that, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." It's on us to pick up the mantle and keep marching toward a democracy that works for all -- not just the wealthy few and the powerful.

Millions observe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day by reflecting on where we have been and where we need to go in our relentless pursuit of racial and economic justice. It's also celebrated as a day of action and of service to the community.

It's clear the current health and economic crises exasperated the deep hurt and challenges Americans are facing every single day. That's why in the spirit of celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy, I hope you'll join me in participating in the Day of Service. There are a lot of opportunities to get involved locally, to give back, and to help bend that arc toward justice.

There's no peace without justice. And there can't be justice without accountability. Seeing symbols of hate raised in the People's House is a sight I will never forget. It's a call to action to all leaders that our country must do the work of facing its past sins of slavery, bigotry, and classism.

I am committed to doing that work because I know when we the people fight for change -- we win. I haven't forgotten that the same day rioters attacked our Capitol, a Black man was elected to the Senate to represent Georgia for the first time in U.S. history. I haven't forgotten that a Jewish man who was mentored by civil rights leader John Lewis was also elected that day.

In such a difficult time in our nation's history, I have hope. And it's the honor of a lifetime to join you on the front lines in our battle for equality and justice for all. We march on.

In solidarity,

Dwight
