Car Caravan Protest Calls on David Rouzer to Resign in Wake of His Vote to Challenge Biden's Election

Protesters held a socially distanced car caravan in Wilmington on Wednesday calling on Republican David Rouzer, the District 7 Representative in the U.S. House, to resign in the wake of his vote to undermine the 2020 Presidential election. Just hours after violent insurrectionists supporting Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, Rouzer and six other Republican members of the North Carolina delegation voted to support objections to validating the Biden Presidency. About 50 cars gathered in the parking lot of New Hanover County offices in Wilmington to express their outrage at Rouzer's betrayal of democratic values.

"Let's be very, very clear," said Leslie Cohen, one of the event organizers. "The violence that happened last week in Washington, is the direct result of lies that have been spread about the validity and safety of our election, and Representative Rouzer and other like him in continuing to spread those lies, has emboldened those violent insurrectionists that we saw on the Capitol.”

Rouzer has a history of going to absurd lengths to back Donald Trump no matter how damaging his outrageous lies and unhinged actions become. In addition to siding with the insurrectionists goal of derailing certification of Joe Biden's election win, Rouzer also signed on to a lawsuit from the Texas Attorney General last year that would have disenfranchised millions of voters. According to Ballotopedia, Rouzer voted against stopping Trump from diverting funds from North Carolina military bases to pay for his border wall, voted to allow Trump to continue hostilities against Iran, and, of course, voted against both impeachment attempts.  Click here for WECT's news story about the car caravan.

Also NHCDP has been circulating a petition demanding Rouzer's resignation or removal. Click here to review and sign the Resign Rouzer petition.

Volunteers Sought for 2021 Precinct Meetings

2021 Annual Precinct Meetings are to be scheduled in the two week period between March 6 and March 20.  We have been advised by NCDP that we are to determine our own plans on how to conduct these meetings as best fits the needs of our precincts considering the ongoing severity of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Our planning team recommends either a Zoom meeting or a masked and socially distanced outdoor meeting.  We realize most precinct leaders will require assistance in conducting a Zoom meeting and are working on plans to help.  We are looking for volunteers:

Zoom “experts” who can schedule multiple meetings on their paid Zoom accounts and who can run the technical aspect of the meeting.

Zoom “helpers” to assist Chair during Zoom meeting.

Helpers to assist precinct chairs in making meeting notification phone calls to precinct members.

Publicity volunteers who can place NHCDP precinct meeting announcements in media outlets

Please email Susanne Werner (2nd Vice-chair), [email protected], using 2021 Precinct Meetings Volunteer in the subject line.

Biden Harris Inaugural Day of Service: Food Drive For Nourish NC

The Biden/Harris Inaugural Committee has challenged Democrats to commit to a Day of Service on Monday January 18th, Martin Luther King Day. On that day New Hanover Democrats traditionally march in the MLK parade. Sadly, because of Covid 19, there won't be an MLK Parade this year. Instead, the New Hanover County Democratic Party has planned a contactless, drive-through food bank in the parking lot at our office, at 5041 New Centre Drive, from 1-3 pm. We plan to set up a drive-through lane which will enable you to drop off food without leaving your car. Volunteers will be available to receive donations or retrieve them from your trunk.

We are collecting food items for Nourish NC, which is actively working to feed hungry children. Nourish reports that 1 in 5 children in New Hanover struggle with hunger, and it has only gotten worse with Covid, which has suspended in-person teaching and increased unemployment and other hardship. If it's more convenient you can drop off a check made out to Nourish NC.

Petition Seeks Scrutiny of New Foundation From Hospital Sale

Former Senator Harper Peterson has circulated a petition and letter to State AG Josh Stein's office as it continues its review of New Hanover Regional Medical Center's sale to Novant Health. According to Wilmingtonbiz.com, Peterson said "This response sends a clear message that the community is not in support of the actions being taken by the NHC Commission, NHRMC Board of Trustees and the newly formed New Hanover Community Endowment and their intentions to privately manage, invest and disburse $1.25 billion in public assets."  As of yesterday the petition had 464 signatures. You can read the Wilmintonbiz story about the petition here.  You can view and sign the petition here.
