As our loved ones that have passed rise to the heavens as stars with the Matariki Constellation, we bid them farewell and invoke them to guide us throughout the big year ahead. The 2020 Election is nearing and there are many kaupapa ahead of us but the most pressing at this time is the focus on our tamariki. This is our time to rise like we did 15 years ago and our people have responded to review Oranga Tamariki and affiliated agencies. At a personal level, things have been busy. Mum and dad celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, things at the home front are good and the other hats I have continue to keep things focused and busy. Co-Vice-President appointment
It’s a privilege to announce that Rangi McLean has been appointed as Co-Vice President Tāne. Rangi is no stranger to the party and is one of our best advocates and is always logo’d up wherever he is around the country. Kei taku rangatira – e mihi kau ana. We are calling an important wānanga and hui on 2-3 August 2019 hosted by the Waiariki electorate in Rotorua. As a result of the campaign kōrero, we held a zoom hui on 3 July and can confirm that we will be having a National Wānanga to confirm our campaign strategy followed by our bimonthly National Council meeting. Depending on when the election is called, we have up to 13-17 months before the election and being clear on which electorates will have candidates is essential to our upcoming campaign and our long-term strategy Te Ara Whāroa 2035. We know that the Hīkoi to Wellington and the National Wānanga are very close to each other, so we are asking that Electorate help members that wish to attend both if you are able. For any queries, contact Matariki Cribb-Fox otherwise we look forward to seeing you there. As with other National Council Hui, there is no expectation to give koha as the registration fee covers costs, he whakaaro noa. E aha ana tātau – What’s been happening? Hari Huri Tau! Yes, it’s our birthday! We have two chances to remember our birthday, firstly Dame Tariana resigned on 7 July and then on 11 July 2004, in the packed Whanganui Memorial Hall, the Māori Party was formally formed. We are 15 years old and we’ve had ups and downs and right now, we are rebuilding for the future to return back to Parliament with strength. In June we had our National Council hui at my marae, Maungārongo in Ohakune where it was great to connect with branches from Te Tai Hauāuru who came to tautoko. We also discussed our strategy for the upcoming campaign and can confirm that we will have a national wānanga on Friday 2 August and then our National Council hui the next day. In addition to the National Wānanga and Council meeting, we are also supporting the Hands Off Our Tamariki Hīkoi to Parliament on Tuesdau 30 July at Parliament. See more below. There are also a number of Inquiries into a number of issues including Māori Health Inequalities, Education and the one that has the most coverage, Oranga Tamariki. As we gain momentum with Oranga Tamariki it’s important to remember the other kaupapa. These are dear to my heart as a number of my friends, all my age, are battling cancer and it’s wrong that you have to be rich to live! Through all these kaupapa, our policy team continue to gear things up to present our manifesto at the AGM on 12 October hosted by Te Tai Hauāuru. LET’S MARCH – Hands Off Our Tamariki Hīkoi to Parliament We have decided to march and support the Hands Off Our Tamariki Hīkoi that has been organised to march from Wellington Railway Station to Parliament on Tuesday 30 July 2019 and the details are in the graphic below.
National Council Hui At the foot of Koro Ruapehu, on Saturday 15 June, my marae, Maungārongo, hosted the bimonthly National Council meeting. It was great having the Māori Party whānau at home and reminded my mum of the good kōrero they had when Howie Tamati visited and stayed during his campaign. At the hui we fine tuned the Candidate Selection which will be confirmed in Rotorua at our next Council meeting. We also shared the ‘whatu framework’ for our policy development and had a big kōrero about the upcoming campaign strategy. Our next meeting dates are:

Ngā Kaupapa Pōti – Our Policies for 2020 Last month we started sharing ideas that should help with policy development and thanks to those that have feed in to the mahi so far, there’s been some really good feedback. We’ve also developed a whatu framework that we are using to test each policy that is being developed. When you whatu a korowai, you have whenu strands that go down which will be the represent our key policy areas and the aho that go across that focus in on either restoring, retaining or growing, empowering and transforming. Ngā Pōti Kaunihera ā-Rohe – Local Government Elections Local Government Elections are gearing up and we are starting to see billboards and vehicles promoting people that are standing in the elections. Auckland Council elections will be contested and many more Māori are hopefully standing throughout the motu. For our branches, this is a great opportunity to get involved with whoever you may be supporting to get our people over the line and to gear up for the 2020 General Elections. It’s also a chance to get more of our people enrolled to help with next years election. Our Co-Vice President Tāne, Rangi McLean is standing for the Manurewa Local Board election and our National Treasurer, Elijah Pue, is standing for the Ruapehu District Council.
