John,
Tomorrow we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Our nation is still grappling with the very issues that he protested and led marches against roughly 60 years ago. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for basic civil rights. Black people in the United States are still fighting the same battles today.
King had a dream that one day we could all be judged by the content of our character as opposed to the color of our skin, but that still hasn’t happened. We saw this first hand when (as Congresswoman Cori Bush called him) the White Supremacist in Chief, Donald Trump and his lackeys incited a riot at our nation’s capitol earlier this month.
Many people wonder how we got to this point. They want to blame Trump for all of it. And while Trump most certainly is a problem, he’s not the sole cause of what we saw on January 6. Donald Trump is just one piece of the puzzle of white supremacy, a plague on America since the first African slaves arrived in Jamestown in 1619.
When we consider how we got to this place, we are reminded of MLK’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail” where he says that “the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’...’”
John -- establishment politicians are our white moderates. They have failed us time and time again, and that’s why we NEED to keep sending the Cori Bushes, the Jamaal Bowmans, the AOCs and the Rashida Tlaibs to Congress so we can fully have a Brand New Congress that doesn’t consist of White moderates who throw their constituents under the bus in the name of law, order, or corporate cash.
Will you honor MLK’s legacy by supporting our work today?
We are tired of people who want the absence of tension. We are ready for the presence of justice.
In service,
