Thanks to you, WE DID IT!

With your generous support in December, we were able to secure every penny of $174,500 in matching funds offered by fellow donors to double the value of your gifts. That means we will have twice the resources available to put toward our youth-led climate litigation in the year ahead. All thanks to all of you!

Your invaluable gifts couldn’t come at a more important time as we anticipate that 2021 will be a very big year for Juliana v. United States.

Soon, with a new incoming Department of Justice representing the Biden administration as government defendants in the case, we expect less obfuscation and delay than we saw from the Trump administration. As a result, there are several routes the case may now take.

We may have the opportunity to argue the case before an en banc panel of 11 judges of the Ninth Circuit, or the Biden administration may align with some of our positions, opening up possibilities for the case to return to trial or even to be resolved through settlement with the administration agreeing to the youth plaintiffs’ requests. And if none of those scenarios come to pass, the next step would be petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court to review the decision. Any and all of these routes will lead us closer to securing the systemic and science-based actions necessary to ensure a safe climate for all children and future generations.
Simultaneously, our state and global domestic cases are also advancing. In 2021, we anticipate decisions in our Alaska, Washington, Montana, Florida, Canada, and possibly Mexico and Uganda cases, and we are also expecting to file new youth-led constitutional climate cases in other U.S. states and international jurisdictions.

All of this urgent and necessary work is only possible because of your generous and sustaining commitment to our efforts. Thank you for your critical partnership which allows us to continue this work with fierce resolve and strength.
