Dear John,

A year ago, who could have guessed what would happen over the next 12 months? 2020 not only brought about events that shocked the world, but challenges that have affected each and every one of us.

While COVID-19 continues to threaten and devastate communities around the globe, it has also brought us closer together in some ways – reminding us that we are all connected, and that kindness is the way forward.

Stay with us as we wrap up some of the major events that shook and shaped the world in 2020:

Fighting in northern Syria forced approximately 1 million people to flee their homes. Through your support, we were able to jump into action and deliver life-saving aid to thousands of families.

Test your knowledge

The rapid spread of COVID-19 around the world, left refugees and displaced people more vulnerable than ever - but generosity from people like you means that UNHCR was able to stay and deliver to millions of people across 68 countries.

As people took to the streets to protest widespread racism in our societies, we remained committed to fighting discrimination, inequality and xenophobia. UNHCR was founded on the principles of justice and equality, and we always strive to protect people from persecution.

After five years of war, food scarcity and now COVID-19, Yemen remains the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Thanks to generous donations, we’ve provided cash payments to more than 900,000 of the country’s most vulnerable people.

Two explosions ripped through Beirut, Lebanon, devastating the city and killing hundreds of people. However, we were able to provide immediate emergency aid and temporary shelter to 84,000 people who lost their homes in the blasts, and we continue to support recovery efforts.

A massive fire tore through Moria Camp on the isle of Lesvos, Greece, leaving more than 12,000 asylum-seekers homeless. UNHCR responded quickly to provide medical support, food, blankets and temporary shelter, as well as hygiene facilities to fight COVID-19.

2020 was an extremely challenging year for everyone - but for refugees it was even tougher. Even in the most difficult situations, UNHCR has stayed and delivered, working tirelessly to save lives and protect those who’ve lost everything.

Thanks for being by our side through all of this and more. We’re very grateful to be going into 2021 with your support.
