Team, with each passing day we're learning more disturbing facts about just how close members of Congress were to serious harm during last week's deadly attack on the Capitol.

On The Intercept's Deconstructed podcast, Pramila describes her frightening experience of being trapped in the House gallery with violent rioters just on the other side of the door:

"There was a very real fear that these people who were pounding on the doors, maybe just 15 feet from us, were going to get in and that we would not make it out...

For those of us who are people of color, several of us, when we were told to take off our member pins so that the insurrectionists couldn't identify us, we actually had to make a choice about whether we wanted to do that or keep them on because we weren't sure that Capitol Police would identify us as members if we took them off. So I kept mine on."

These insurrectionists came fully prepared to cause harm. In fact, they killed several people. They had bombs. They had nooses, zip ties, and pipes. They came armed and with bulletproof vests. They chanted, "Hang Mike Pence." They hunted the Speaker of the House. And even when Pramila made it out of the gallery and to a secure location, several of her Republican colleagues refused to wear a mask and laughed off requests to put one on while sheltering in a crowded room — resulting in her COVID infection.

But through all of this, Pramila has been strong because we cannot be deterred. We must do everything that we can to defend our democracy, remove this president, and hold him fully accountable so he doesn't stay in power for a single day more.

Then, we must join Pramila in her work to deliver people-first policies that meet the scale of the overlapping crises we face.
