The final chapter of the Trump administration has been a disturbing one, friend. Last week, the president and his far-right allies incited a violent attack on our democracy. This is the sort of chaos President Trump has constantly stoked during his time in office – but our democratic institutions and the rule of law will prevail. So for the second time in his tenure, I voted to impeach President Donald Trump for his crimes against our republic and the American people.

What we witnessed last week – what members of Congress and our staff lived through – is the natural consequence of the president's repeated and forceful lies about the credibility of our elections. He used his power and dangerous rhetoric to urge an insurrection – an attack on American democracy.

Now is the time for accountability. No one is above the law – and impeachment is the constitutional remedy through which Congress holds the president accountable. Now it’s up to the Senate to vote to convict President Trump for his crimes.

Let me be perfectly clear, friend. Voting for impeachment is not a step I took lightly. But right now, we are facing a choice: letting Trumpism off the hook – letting it fester and grow and seep only more deeply into the fabric of our democratic system. Or stopping that extremism in its tracks with a vote that rebukes lies, rebukes violence and rebukes unhinged attacks on our free and fair elections.

We've been through a lot together. Today, I'm asking you to stand with me in solidarity once again as we work to protect our democracy. Please, add your name right now to urge the Senate to convict President Donald J. Trump for incitement of insurrection.

I have consistently called the president a habitual offender. And the more he gets away with misconduct, the more likely he is to engage in it again.

He is a clear and present danger to the nation. And our nation must be swift and united in what we do next, friend: united in defense of our democracy. United in upholding the Constitution. United in making lawbreakers and those who incite them answerable to the American people. 

So I have to ask one more time: Will you add your name to my petition urging the Senate to vote to convict President Trump?
