Hi John - When he takes office in a week, President-elect Joe Biden is going to have an enormous task ahead of him. One of the biggest crisis he will need to address is children in America going hungry. Because of the pandemic and massive job losses, 1 in 4 kids is not getting enough food to eat.[1] This issue is even more prevalent for children facing inequities, like Black, Latino, Indigenous children and those in rural areas. Across America, 84% of the counties where the most children struggle with hunger are rural and high poverty. Counties that ranked the worst overall are mostly rural, poor, concentrated in the south and are communities of color.[2] The fact that children are going hungry is simply unacceptable in a nation with as much bounty as ours. If you agree, tell President-elect Biden and your members of Congress that it’s time to ensure kids have enough to eat! The recent stimulus package passed by Congress helped address some of the more urgent needs for families who are struggling. But it wasn’t enough. Schools need to maintain flexibility so they can provide food to students, even if they are learning remotely. As parents continue to struggle to find work, lawmakers need to keep providing enough funding for key nutrition programs that help them continue to put food on their tables. And we need to modernize our nutrition support programs to make it easier for families that need assistance to apply and receive food. No child should have to go to bed hungry or struggle to learn on an empty stomach. Send a message today – make sure kids have enough to eat! Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
