In the 1980s, at the height of the AIDS crisis, self-help guru Louise Hay began to offer 'Hayrides': counseling sessions that drew hundreds of HIV-positive gay men. Another Hayride, which was produced entirely out of archival footage, transports us to these meetings as Louise discusses the therapeutic benefits of self-love and positive affirmations to cure their illnesses.
Though Hay was not without her critics, watching her sessions, how she would encourage the men to take a mirror, look at it, and love what they saw, we're reminded that, in the face of governmental and societal neglect, hope and community arrive in unexpected forms.
Another Hayride is presented by POV in partnership with The New York Times Op-Docs.
