John --
January 6 was a horrific day for America, as domestic terrorists sought to overturn the results of the most secure election in American history -- and to do harm to our nation's leaders in Washington, DC.
As we brace for more actions in DC, Lansing, and other state capitols in the coming days, I agree with many of our elected leaders that we simply cannot have unity without accountability first.
But with that quest for unity and accountability, if we fail to address the underlying issues that led to the insurrection in the first place, then we aren't doing our job.
We must tackle the racism and white supremacist notions that was on display with confederate flags, Camp Auschwitz sweatshirts, and white power hand signals -- the racism that pervade some of our communities and that was emboldened by Trump. We must address the inequities that continue to exist, particularly in our systems of policing and the courts.
And we must never back down in our efforts to uplift the ideals of a democratic republic, making decisions based on facts, and telling the truth. Like the truth about the November election -- voters turned out in historic numbers and Americans chose Joe Biden to be our next President.
In solidarity,
P.S. Thank you to those of you who have reached out to wish me safety. I will not be in Lansing this coming week, as session has been canceled and the Capitol building is closed due to the credible safety threats. My team and I have received security briefings and are taking several safety precautions.
