Dear John,
Congress just voted to approve the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, allowing legal marijuana businesses to access traditional banking services, by a vote of 321-103. While the bill must still pass the Senate, this is a major victory for drug policy reform, and a crucial step in protecting our communities.
When the Law Enforcement Action Partnership testified in support [ [link removed] ] of the SAFE Banking Act in February, we called on Congress to prioritize public safety. Forcing legitimate marijuana businesses to operate on a cash-only basis puts employees, patrons, and entire neighborhoods at risk. Dispensaries shouldn't be targets for theft. Medical marijuana patients and responsible adult-use consumers shouldn't have to worry about their personal safety when visiting a legal business. Thankfully, Congress heard our call and today, they made the responsible choice: they voted in the interest of public safety.
LEAP was the only law enforcement organization invited to testify in support of this groundbreaking bill. Our speakers fight for safer, more just solutions to the most critical criminal justice and drug policy issues. When LEAP's law enforcement experts have a seat at the table, we're able to move reform forward. That wouldn't be possible without your support [ [link removed] ].
Today, we celebrate a powerful shift in the world of drug policy and criminal justice. Tomorrow, we go back to work, because our fight is far from over. Donate today to stand with LEAP and make sure this is just the beginning [ [link removed] ].
In solidarity,
Major Neill Franklin (Ret.)
