The United States of American ought to be a force for international peace
— not mercenaries for cash. But Donald Trump has clearly displayed that he
views our role in global conflict in a very particular and insidious way:

With all due respect to the President, that’s not his decision to make.
The power to declare war lies with the legislature, not the executive
branch. But for too long, we’ve allowed this Administration to chip away
at the checks and balances that help keep our world and our soldiers safe.

We should never allow American lives to be thrown away to do the bidding
of a foreign power just because they “pay cash.” But unless we take a
powerful stand for the cause of international peace and justice right here
and now, Trump will do just that.

We’ve already won major victories in reigning in executive overreach, and
I swear to you, I will do everything in my power to stop  President Trump
from dragging us back into the age of George W. Bush’s reckless and
unnecessary conflicts.

We need to be building schools, not more bombs. We need more bridges, not
tanks. We need to invest in powerful action on climate change, not more
drones. Together, we can invest in our future — a future with opportunity
for all, economic justice for all, and peace for all.
