If there’s one thing we know is true, it’s that
we keep us safe -- not the police, not the authorities.
Now, as we face down white supremacist attacks in D.C. and all across the country, it is more important than ever that we look out for and take care of each other.
Black Lives Matter is committed to community-driven solutions and a reimagined view of public safety. We hold fast to the organizing principle of non-violent direct action. While Black Lives Matter is not hosting or participating in any counter-protests against white supremacists, we also believe in the fundamental right to self defense.
We encourage you not to engage with these white supremacists who are planning violent attacks in Washington, D.C. and state capitals all over the nation from Saturday, January 16th through inauguration day on the 20th. We also want our folks to be ready, to have a safety plan, and to “love and protect one another” in real ways.

Our movement elders and leaders have seen white supremacist violence throughout our nation’s history and responded with community-driven solutions which have moved our communities closer to freedom.
Together, we can protect Black communities and build a democracy that serves all of us, not a select few.
