This huge number is meaningful to me for a few reasons: I’m not a career politician. I don’t have decades of professional fundraising experience. I’m a public defender from Petersburg, a wife and a mom of two rambunctious three-year-old boys, fighting every day for a stronger Virginia that puts working families first. |

Almost exactly four years ago, I watched from my living room as Donald Trump stood on the steps of our nation’s Capitol, put his hand on a Bible, and took the oath of office. I was hurt. I was angry. And I told myself: if Donald Trump could run for office, then so could I. |

When I announced my campaign for Virginia’s House of Delegates, I was told I was wasting my time. The odds were stacked against me: my opponent outraised me by $100,000 and was endorsed by almost every elected official. I knew I couldn’t control those things -- but I could control how hard I worked. And against the odds, I won. |

Now, four years later, I’m running for governor. Once again, I know the path ahead is difficult -- if elected, I would be our nation’s first Black woman governor -- and I know the odds are once again stacked against me. Fewer people donate to women candidates, and we have to work twice as hard. |
|
That’s why I’m so excited about these fundraising numbers. Most of our supporters chipped in less than $25 to bring us to over $1.9 million raised. Together, our people powered movement is growing stronger by the day. |

Jennifer Carroll Foy was born and raised in Petersburg and was one of the first women to graduate from the Virginia Military Institute. Jennifer then served as a public defender and foster mom.
In 2017, she flipped a Republican district as a first-time candidate pregnant with twins. During her two terms as Delegate, Jennifer championed the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, helped expand Medicaid to 400,000 Virginians, and advocated for the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable communities. |
