It's important that you hear from me directly regarding the insurrection incited by our president last week.

The siege on our Capitol was a direct product of four years of division and dissent that emanated from the very highest office in this country. It was a culmination of President Trump's relentless, baseless, and unsubstantiated attacks on our elections – the very heart of our democracy.

Those who carried out this attack and those who inspired it must be held accountable – including the president. His actions have been and continue to be a threat not only to our Democratic Republic, but also to our national security.

I believe President Trump has abdicated his responsibility to safeguard this nation. That's why I voted in favor of impeachment this week.

I did not make this grave decision lightly. There is such division in this country, and I believe that we must do everything in our power as elected leaders to heal this nation. I am committed to that healing process.

We owe it to the people of this country to move forward from this election with a focus on healing the divisions that have been created – and on ensuring our communities can build back better from this pandemic. We must be a government that works for all people – one that stands on the side of truth and justice.

There's no question that our country's resolve is being tested. But I believe with every fiber of my being that we will pass this test. We will be stronger as a nation.

For now, please keep the faith and take care of yourselves. There is so much work to be done, and brighter days are coming soon.
