President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris have assembled an extraordinary team to lead their administration. I am committed to helping facilitate a smooth and fast confirmation process in the Senate for all of their cabinet nominees.

But after the deadly riots at the U.S. Capitol last week, there is now a particularly urgent need to confirm the national security nominees quickly.

These positions include the nominee for the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, Defense Secretary-nominee Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State-nominee Antony Blinken, and Director of National Intelligence-nominee Avril Haines.

I join the Biden-Harris transition team in calling for the swift confirmation of these nominees so that they are in place and ready to go on day one.

When our national security is on the line, there is no justification for needless delays for these qualified nominees. Their paperwork has already been submitted and several of them have already been confirmed for previous positions.

It's time to give the national security nominees a smooth and fast confirmation process so they can get right to work to protect American lives.
