BREAKING NEWS ALERT
Eric Lander, the founding director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, will step down and take an unpaid leave of absence to serve as White House science adviser after Joseph R. Biden Jr. is inaugurated as president on Wednesday, according to the Cambridge institute.

The position will be elevated to Cabinet-level for the first time.
