The Bureau of Justice Statistics encourages comments for 60 days until March 15, 2021, on the reinstatement, with change, of a previously approved data collection for which approval has expired: Census of Publicly Funded Forensic Crime Laboratories. Your comments to BJS's request to the Office of Management and Budget, published in the"Federal Register [ [link removed] ]", should address points such as


* whether the proposed data collection is necessary, including whether the information will have practical utility
* the accuracy of the agency's estimate of the burden of the proposed collection of data, including the validity of the methodology and assumptions
* whether and how the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected can be enhanced
* the burden of the information collection on respondents, including the use of appropriate automated, electronic, mechanical, or other technological collection techniques.

This data collection is a census of federal, state, and local publicly funded forensic crime laboratories that analyze criminal evidence. Data collected includes information on personnel, budgets, workloads, policies, and procedures of crime laboratories.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics encourages comments for 60 days untilMarch 16, 2021, on the reinstatement of a previously approved data collection: Firearm Inquiry Statistics (FIST) Program. Your comments to BJS's request to the Office of Management and Budget, published in the"Federal Register [ [link removed] ]", should address points such as


* whether the proposed data collection is necessary, including whether the information will have practical utility
* the accuracy of the agency's estimate of the burden of the proposed collection of data, including the validity of the methodology and assumptions
* whether and how the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected can be enhanced
* the burden of the information collection on respondents, including the use of appropriate automated, electronic, mechanical, or other technological collection techniques.

Through this data collection, BJS obtains information from state and local checking agencies responsible for maintaining records on the number of background checks for firearm transfers or permits that were issued, processed, tracked, or conducted during the calendar year.
