Hi John,

Last Wednesday morning, we felt more hopeful than we had in a long time and we were gearing up to celebrate unbelievable victories in Georgia. Then, of course, everything changed. A violent, pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempted coup that resulted in the death of at least five people, including a Capitol Police Officer.

Eight days and one impeachment later, Georgia’s election feels like a lifetime ago. But we didn’t want the momentous victory to pass uncelebrated.

Georgia voters made history by electing Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff to the United States Senate. Warnock—whose mother picked cotton as a teenager and who is the senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, which became known as America’s Freedom Church after the assassination of Martin Luther King—will become Georgia’s first Black Senator. And Ossoff will become the state’s first Jewish Senator and the youngest Democratic Senator elected since Joe Biden won his first Senate seat.

And, crucially, their elections will bring a gun responsibility majority to the Senate! The gun lobby’s stranglehold on Congress has finally been broken. That means that decades of federal inaction on gun safety could soon come to an end!

We can’t afford for Congress to continue passing the buck on lifesaving gun safety policies like expanding background checks and closing the boyfriend loophole. We will be working day in and day out to hold our federal officials accountable and make sure they follow through on their promise to act to end gun violence.

With gratitude to all the organizers, advocates, volunteers, donors, and voters who made this possible,
Dylan (he/him)
