John,
Like you, I was appalled by the recent events in our nation’s Capital. At the very foundation of our Republic is the right of people to peacefully petition our government for a redress of grievances.
Last week, thousands of our fellow Americans tried to do just that – seeking recognition for their concerns about the integrity of our electoral processes and the security of the 2020 election. Sadly, hundreds of demonstrators became violent. They put others in great danger and overshadowed any message or concerns that peaceful demonstrators were trying to convey. Violence is wholly antithetical to our shared American values; I am confident that lawbreakers who stormed the seat of our Legislative Branch will be rightly held accountable for their condemnable actions.
Just prior to that tragic day, runoff elections were held in Georgia that determined both U.S. Senators from that state. As a Republican, I was of course disappointed with the results. (although I remain incredibly proud of our young Team Maryott professionals who have busted their tails for weeks now going door to door in Georgia) As a father, financial planner, and as an American however, I am more than disappointed - I am deeply concerned about the path our federal government may try to take and what it could mean for our future. While I realize some checks and balances remain in place, I am concerned about three things that so-called “Progressive” Democrats will press for which I believe will have disastrous and irrevocable consequences for our country:
Universal Basic Income
Sounds so nice, doesn’t it? A basic income for all…. The problem is twofold:
1. The concept is the complete opposite of what our country has always stood for. You come here and you work for a living. As a broader society, we will catch you if you fall – and if you are not able-bodied, we will maintain your safety net. That’s who we are. But give an income to someone who chooses not to work, out of the income of those who do choose to work? That is not who we are.
2. It is simply not financially sustainable.
On a personal note, I believe that the cruelest thing you can do to another human being is give them just enough to exist. How completely and totally self-defeating.
Government-Run Healthcare
To be clear – “Medicare For All” is Government Managed Healthcare for all. Their dream bill is HR1384 and it abolishes ALL private insurance for critical and conventional healthcare services. By rendering private healthcare insurance illegal, it is the most singularly un-American and heavy-handed legislation I have ever seen in print. It is frightening.
We absolutely can provide care and access for every person in our great country – but not like this. Not by forcing every single American onto a government-managed system. It is not smart and it is not necessary. And if you are on Medicare today – a program by the way that is full of private insurance – please recognize that it is completely abolished as we know it under their plan.
Open Borders
Yes, we are a nation of immigrants. But historically we are a nation of legal immigrants who came here through a managed and thoughtful process. Thoughtful opposition to opening our borders is not related to a lack of compassion or any kind of xenophobia. The issue is simply one of supply and demand. We currently have so much to offer as a nation. We provide the unlimited American Dream of course, and we back it up with a very, very generous safety net. Come take your shot – and if you fail we will provide you with a standard of living (assuming family dependents) that will likely exceed that which you left behind. What human being in any of these tragically broken and corrupt countries would not want that for them and their children? And they should want that. The problem is our supply is limited - that is a fact. We simply could not sustain our current system with open borders.
SO WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
The success and the viability of our two-party system, and our critical checks and balances, will depend in large part on the reaction of Conservatives, Republicans, and Independents who favor moderation. Whether you are a campaign volunteer, a donor, or an active and vocal advocate for limited government, if we succumb to the temptation to throw in the towel, I believe it is not an exaggeration to suggest that our country as we know it will change quite meaningfully for the worse. And in so doing, a major shift will occur that consolidates more and more power at the federal level, and ultimately in the hands of a few. This is something our Founding Fathers warned about, and it is something they strived hard to prevent.
So we get busy and we stay busy. We hold our heads high and we compete at every level and in every race. To facilitate that, there is a ton of work to do. As a campaign team, we are already digging in on many projects that will help to better equip conservative candidates in the 49th and the broader region.
We have also received inquiries from voters who want to start initiatives separate from any campaign, and we are happy to guide and advise as best we can in that realm as well. There is much to do!!
