Friends –
As advocates for social change, we often must hold two truths in our heads and in our hearts at the same time. This week, the need to do that was clearer than ever.
We watched alongside the rest of the country as a bipartisan majority of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach Donald Trump for the second time, this time for inciting violence and threatening the peaceful transfer of power at the Capitol on January 6. The Campaign for Southern Equality joined many organizations and elected officials in calling for his removal from office – read our statement here. ([link removed])
In the same week, LGBTQ North Carolinians saw the hopeful and powerful impact of local organizing when three municipalities – Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough – voted unanimously to pass LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances. These ordinances were the first approved since the 2016 passage of the discriminatory laws HB2 and HB142, a key prong of which expired on December 1, restoring local jurisdictions’ freedom to pass these protections.
The passage of these ordinances is contributing to momentum across North Carolina – and it’s important that we cheer it on and encourage other cities, towns, and counties to take action! Can you help spread the word about this week’s victories and the NC is Ready campaign that we’ve launched with our partners at Equality North Carolina?

Together, we’ll continue to push through our country’s painful moments and celebrate our triumphs. Thank you for all you’re doing.
Take care,
Allison Scott
