Like everyone, my heart broke as I watched tear gas used in the Capitol Rotunda last Wednesday.

As our nation reckons with the horrific attack on the U.S. Capitol, I wanted to share with you my latest op-ed in The Hill on why these events matter not just for our own democracy but for America’s interests around the world.

Since our earliest days, America has always been a beacon of democracy for so many – and last week’s shameful insurrection and political violence is exactly what we work to prevent around the globe.
