With extreme levels of polarization and President Trump’s cult-like following, it may seem like nothing can change peoples’ minds about our president. But our polling finds that Trump’s incitement of terrorism at the Capitol last week has made a significant dent in his standing with voters — especially with Republicans and Independents.

Our polling finds that nearly two-thirds of voters think Trump is responsible for the violence at the Capitol. And in a new blog post on Wednesday, we show that Trump’s approval rating among Republicans has dropped from a +74 margin to +60 over the past week and a half. The drop was even more severe for Independents, plunging from -7 net approval to -27.

Our survey — conducted on January 9-10 — also found majority support (53 percent) for impeaching Trump, meaning Wednesday’s impeachment was not only the right thing but the popular thing to do.

Ok, well that’s the positive angle of these results. The pessimistic angle is that four in five Republican voters don’t think Trump should have been impeached. Even more concerningly, our polling shared in Vox shows that 49 percent of Republican voters don’t trust the election results and don’t think Biden should be inaugurated.

Here are some more unsettling results compiled by Waleed Shahid:

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

  • We’re inches away — it’s just five days (!!) until Trump is out and Biden is inaugurated. And Sen. Elizabeth Warren is back on our blog to explain how Biden can use the U.S.’ purchasing power to support American manufacturing jobs and encourage the production of sustainable products.

In her op-ed, Warren explains how our government can direct the hundreds of billions of dollars it spends on public procurement towards “greener buildings and materials, lower- and zero-emission vehicles, and other more sustainable purchases.” And it’s a popular idea, with support extending across partisan lines:

  • We also got now-regular-DFP-contributor Sen. Ron Wyden on the blog to demonstrate the importance of tying the $600 unemployment expansion to the unemployment rate, so the benefits don’t go away until unemployment hits pre-pandemic levels.

  • Carlina Rivera, chair of the New York City Council, laid out a comprehensive plan on our blog for getting NYC’s vaccinations back on track. This includes improving and expanding distribution centers, establishing a clear chain of command, opening up new coronavirus testing sites, and bolstering public outreach.

  • Just yesterday, our polling published in the Daily Beast found that 51 percent of voters in Missouri think that their coup-supporting senator, Josh Hawley, should resign — including one in five Republicans.

  • Some big 2021 news — we’ve extended our partnership with The Appeal! Just this week, we’ve collaborated to share timely polling on key proposals, including swing district voter support for the progressive agenda and strong support nationwide for one-time, monthly, and retroactive $2,000 stimulus checks.

  • In the Washington Post, our polling on voters’ perceptions of whether the 2020 election was legitimate was compared with political elites’ perceptions of the same question. Check out the results here.

  • In These Times covered our polling to make the case for monthly $2,000 checks.
