John,
This week, The House of Representatives voted to impeach President Trump for a second time. Every single Democrat and even some Republicans voted to impeach.
But I did not, and the reasons why are foundational to who we are as a country.
First, Impeachment further entrenches our nation's divides at a fragile time when we should be focused on a peaceful transfer of power. With one week until the inauguration, what our country needs most is UNITY, not more fuel thrown on the fire.
Furthermore, House Democrats brought a snap impeachment to the House floor with ZERO due process - no hearings, no trial & no legal defense. This is an incredibly dangerous precedent to set for future Presidents and elected leaders.
The third and most important point, is the reasoning cited for President Trump’s impeachment. The Democrats claim the President was responsible and sought to intentionally cause the violence that occurred at the Capitol last week. That’s the claim, and it is false. They claim this, even after he called for peace and an end to the violence as well as an orderly transition.
The violence we saw at the Capitol was despicable and unAmerican — and it's critical we launch a full investigation into the events on and leading up to January 6th. I’ve called for a bi-partisan 9/11-style commission to get to the bottom of what happened. I’m also introducing anti-rioting legislation at the federal level similar to what Gov DeSantis has introduced in Florida. Make no mistake, those personally responsible for the violence last week should and will be prosecuted. We must have zero tolerance for political violence no matter what.
If Joe Biden is serious about unifying, healing, and moving the country forward, he would have put a stop to this vendetta against the President. Instead, the Democrats in the Senate will spend the first weeks of this term on a trial for a President that will have already left office rather than working on constructive solutions to the nation's problems.
We need to come together as a nation and support a peaceful transfer of power. While the Democrats continue to divide our country, I ask that you join me in standing for unity, praying for the future of our country, and putting practical solutions in place to help heal these divisions.
