We're pursuing the full course of justice against Trump. Read on.
ACLU Supporter –
This week, Donald Trump became the first president to be impeached twice by the House of Representatives for his part in stoking an unruly mob of white supremacists to riot at the Capitol.
We know things are moving very quickly at this moment, but it is worth stating how important the voice of the people was in all of this. The House collectively received over 60,000 messages just from our community alone – sent by ACLU activists like you demanding impeachment. And it made a difference.
But accountability cannot and should not end here. Trump's blatant abuse of power is an affront to our entire democracy. And as we all wait for what comes next, the ACLU is also pushing to ensure the full course of justice is pursued on several fronts, including:
* Calling on acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen to appoint a special counsel to investigate – and if warranted, to prosecute President Donald Trump, his associates, and any other federal official who may have been involved in attempts to subvert the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
* Pushing the Senate to begin impeachment trial proceedings as soon as possible – the necessary next move in holding Trump responsible for his unconstitutional, bad-faith efforts that led to a subversion of our democracy and the endangerment of those who live and work in Washington, D.C.
* Addressing the larger systemic injustices at work at the attacks at the Capitol – including in our racist police systems. The response to rioters at the Capitol by police when compared to the long history of brutality against Black people shows how clearly we must continue our work within the broader movement of racial justice, including the fight to divest from law enforcement as an institution.
ACLU Supporter, since the November election, President Trump and his associates have embarked on a multi-pronged campaign attempting to overturn the clear results. It culminated in his encouragement of a mob storming the Capitol building – carrying weapons, tactical gear, and, in a symbol of the white supremacy underpinning their violent acts, Confederate flags.
This man's presidency may end in a week. The Biden-Harris administration will be inaugurated, and the ACLU will be there for the work ahead – to undo the damage and push for progress. But we cannot allow Trump's actions to go unanswered.
No president is above the law – and we will do all we can to ensure that remains true. So thank you for being with us. We know it has been a tough couple of weeks (and months), and we're grateful for your dedication at this time and always.
For the fight ahead,
The ACLU Team
P.S. We will continue to update you as events unfold in the coming days, but if you are looking for one further action to take right now then we urge you to contact your House representative and express your thanks for their vote to impeach – or your dismay in their vote against. Let's make sure our elected officials know that we are paying attention in this historic moment.
