The NRA has been planting the seeds of armed insurrection for decades and last week showed just how dangerous their rhetoric can be. But they're already back at it, and Giffords needs your help in the struggle to pass strong new gun laws after Joe Biden is sworn in.

Please make a $3 contribution to Giffords today. We'll put it right to work in the fight to make our communities safer from gun violence.

Friends -

Just two weeks after Gabby Giffords was shot, the NRA posted an article on its website saying people should own guns not only for self defense, but the other reason "whether you like it or not -- is enabling the American people to resist tyranny."

For decades, the NRA has whipped its members into a frenzy about "government tyranny."

All in order to sell more guns.

There's a lot of blame to go around for last week's attempted insurrection, and a good amount of it falls squarely in the lap of the NRA.

Here's the truth: there are very few organizations or individuals more committed to stoking fear than the NRA.

Shortly after Sandy Hook, NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre testified before Congress that one of the reasons for the 2nd Amendment was "to make sure these free people in this new country would never be subjugated again."

Not long after Parkland, when states were passing legislation to make our communities safer from gun violence, an NRA Maryland liaison said that the Second Amendment "is not about hunting...it's about being able to stop people who would do you harm, whether that's a criminal or the government."

NRA-TV star Grant Stinchfield said he believed the Second Amendment is "there to make sure we could stand up to a tyrannical government if it ever got to that point."

In the NRA brief filed in "DC vs. Heller" the NRA argued that "the Second Amendment refers to the utility of an armed population in preventing government tyranny."

This goes back decades.

And it's not just the NRA. Some of the chief instigators of the insurrection had spent years radicalizing extremists through inflammatory rhetoric.

Who could forget Donald Trump encouraging "Second Amendment people" to do something if Hillary Clinton won the election in 2016?

And Ted Cruz once wrote that the right to bear arms is "to serve as the ultimate check against governmental tyranny -- for the protection of liberty."

People don't just wake up one morning and decide to try and take over the seat of government in order to overturn an election result.

They are primed.

It happens over time.

It happens when people in positions of authority -- people we should be able to trust -- relentlessly talk about government tyranny and the need to stockpile arms for the day the citizenry must fight back.

The NRA has been doing that for years.

They have abused the trust of their supporters -- a number of whom will be going to jail after last week's attempted insurrection.

All in order to sell more guns.

Thank you for helping us take a stand for commonsense solutions that will make our communities safer from gun violence. Thank you for helping to create an organization with the power to stand up to the NRA.

Last week showed, once again, how important that work is.

Please contribute to help keep us going:

Can Gabby count on you to make a $3 contribution today? We'll put your donation right to work in the fight to pass legislation that will make our communities safer from gun violence.

We've got a chance here in the next few weeks -- a chance to pass some legislation that will strengthen our gun laws -- a chance to pass legislation that will save lives.

All our best,

Team Giffords
