Hi John,

It feels especially fitting that Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls just two days before Inauguration Day, in the midst of so much conflict and struggle over the future of America. Monday will be a day to volunteer, organize, and get to work rebuilding this country, inspired by the charge given to us by Rev. Dr. King himself:

“Make a career of humanity… It will enrich your spirit as nothing else possibly can. It will give you that rare sense of nobility that can only spring from love and selflessly helping your fellow man… You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.”

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day we remember those words and celebrate the organizers who carried that work forward in 2020, including:

  • Census organizers in L.A. County, who overcame the Covid pandemic to ensure that the majority-minority communities in the nation’s hardest-to-count region were counted by the 2020 Census;
  • Labor organizers with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), who registered voters and helped drive historic turnout in the 2020 election, and;
  • Diverse, trailblazing candidates who ran and won on platforms dedicated to combating labor offenses, upholding human rights, reducing economic inequality, championing racial justice, and more.

We also recognize the new senator-elect from Georgia, Rev. Raphael Warnock, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, the historic spiritual home of Dr. King.

On behalf of all of us at Action Network & Action Builder, THANK YOU to the organizers who won victories for progressives during this uniquely challenging year. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

In Solidarity,

Marvin Steele
